MTB Classic

About Event

Though Paul Peaslee sadly passed on in 2018, we are happy his legacy is now an epic community event centered around family & friends that continues to grow and thrive to this day.

Shared Roots: How It All Began

Some twenty-plus years ago, our beloved friend Mr. Paul Peaslee started the Landmine MTB Classic in Wompatuck State Park. After the very first race, Paul took all the unexpected proceeds and went to the bank to open a checking account. When the teller asked him what he wanted to name the account he said, “Call it... Friends of Wompatuck”. And thus the organization focused on stewardship of the park had it's roots laid in the very first running of the Landmine MTB Classic.

Over the years, The Friends of Wompatuck have worked tirelessly to build and improve trails, to construct new bridges, and continue to make the park accessible to as many people as possible. All proceeds from every Landmine MTB Classic have gone directly toward making improvements to Wompatuck State Park. By registering and participating in the Landmine MTB Classic, you’re helping to carry on that stewardship.

So we thank you for participating and being a part of the Landmine MTB Classic. We thank you for supporting the Friends of Wompatuck.

And remember:

Please be safe out there. Please be courteous to other racers. Please be courteous to other park patrons. And above all, Please Enjoy the Ride.

Event Overview

The Course

Almost entirely on singletrack, this race showcases a great deal of what Wompatuck State Park has to offer. You will see a variety of trail situations as well as many of the historic features of the park from when this land was used as grazing grounds in the 1800s and a military compound from 1941-1962. Over the 3.3, 5.5.75, 11.4, or 25 miles, you will encounter rocks, roots, berms, pavement (minimal), fast and slow trails, etc. Although your head will likely be down and you may miss it, you will also be riding by old bunkers, blasting walls, railway beds, and stone walls. This course takes you through the best of New England mountain biking!

The Crowd

The Landmine MTB Classic attracts over 650 racers. Also, since we have single-lap courses, we're able to put everyone on it at once. Thus, our mass starts generate a lot of crowd enthusiasm! We also run a variety of legitimate race options for kids, including a free Little Racers Quarter Mile and also options for a real chip-timed race for even kids as young as 5. Our Little Racers course is a closed-cicuit loop near our main staging area and is open all day for families to enjoy.

Our Volunteers

We put a lot of effort into making sure your day in Wompatuck State Park is excellent and we strive to bring a level of professionalism to Landmine uncharacteristic of events run entirely by volunteers. All year long we have volunteers maintaining and repairing trails with Landmine in mind. Our feed zones have enthusiastic staff. Since we are a single-lap race, it also takes numerous volunteers to mark our entire 25-mile course plus the various extensions. Our parking team will also have you parked quickly and with ease. And, our registration team is so good you'd almost think they're professionals.

Always Affordable

We strive to strike a balance between making sure this race is affordable while also not forgetting that all our proceeds benefit Wompatuck State Park. On a miles per dollar scale, we strive to make this a race the best value in MTB racing. We also offer $20 entry fees for all Juniors (ages 18 and under) and only a $10 entry fee for our Cat 5 course.

Over the Years...

Who can say when it all really began for sure - we were too busy organizing the event and riding our bikes to remember! But one thing is for certain; there's always been t-shirts and pretty much always been stickers. Because stickers absolutely make your bike faster...
