We're Helping Ed Newell Purchase an Adaptive Bike

Ed Newell is an avid mountain biker and trail steward who was seriously injured in a mountain bike accident in February 2023. Following the accident, Ed spent three weeks in the ICU and underwent 10 weeks of in-patient rehabilitation. Since May, he has been actively participating in out-patient rehab. Despite the challenges, Ed resumed mountain biking in July, now on a trike, thanks to the support of Spaulding Adaptive Sports. He regularly enjoys biking with them on Saturdays. However, since Spaulding provides the trike, and the program is only available on Saturdays, Ed is limited in his ability to seize opportunities for spontaneous rides or meet up with friends on other days.

Before his injury, Ed was actively involved with NEMBA, where he frequently led group rides and served as the Duxbury trail representative. Additionally, he helped coach the Wompatuck Warriors youth mountain bike team. This event provides a meaningful opportunity for the community to come together and give back to Ed, supporting his journey to regain independence and continue his passion for mountain biking.

In the fall, Ed received approval for a $5,000 grant from the Kelly Brush Foundation, a significant step towards obtaining his own adaptive mountain bike. The bike of choice is the Azub Ti-Fly X, an adaptive trike with e-assist, valued at around $12,000. The 2024 Wompy Winterfest is a fundraising event aimed at helping Ed raise the necessary funds to cover his portion of the purchase of an adaptive bike.
